With some species it is possible to pollard a tree which allows retention of the tree but at a significantly lesser height than that created by a reduction. Pollarding can be carried out on a number of species including Willow, Ash, Sycamore and London Plane to name but a few.

The growth that follows on a pollard will be vigorous and it is important that a regular cycle (3-5 years) of re-pollarding is carried out as the unions created at the pollard points can be a weak area and it is possible for limb failure to occur should a pollard be overstood.
